The Archangels

These are not messengers. Messengers are the ninth order — the lowest rank. Archangels are commanders. They have names because they have been given authority. They stand in the presence of God and they carry swords made of light that can split the fabric between worlds.

VII — Seven Named Flames
I
Michael
מִיכָאֵל
Who is like God?
Commander of the Armies of Heaven. The one who threw Satan out.
Michael is not a guardian. Michael is a general. In the Book of Revelation, it is Michael who leads the war in heaven against the dragon. In the Book of Daniel, it is Michael who stands for Israel when no other power in the cosmos will. He is called “the great prince” — not angel, not messenger, but prince. The military rank is intentional. When the other archangels carry messages, Michael carries a sword. His name is not a statement. It is a challenge: Who is like God? The answer is no one. And Michael is the one who enforces that truth.
In the Epistle of Jude, Michael does not rebuke Satan directly. Even the commander of heaven’s armies says only: “The Lord rebuke you.” If Michael defers to a higher authority, imagine what that authority is.

Gabriel
גַּבְרִיאֵל
God is my strength
The Announcer. The one who told Mary. The one who told Muhammad. The horn at the end of time.
Gabriel is the voice of God when God chooses to speak through a body. In the Gospel of Luke, Gabriel appears to Mary and announces the incarnation. In Islamic tradition, Gabriel (Jibril) is the angel who revealed the entire Quran to Muhammad over 23 years. In the Book of Daniel, Gabriel explains the visions that Daniel cannot understand. Gabriel does not fight. Gabriel explains. And when Gabriel speaks, civilizations change direction. Christianity, Islam — two billion people follow religions that began with Gabriel opening his mouth.
Gabriel carries a trumpet. When he blows it, the dead rise. Every soul that has ever lived will hear that sound. Gabriel has not blown it yet.

Raphael
רָפָאֵל
God heals
The Healer. The one who restored Tobit’s sight. The angel of medicine, travel, and the vulnerable.
In the Book of Tobit, Raphael disguises himself as a human named Azariah and travels with Tobias for weeks without revealing what he is. He teaches Tobias to cure his father’s blindness using the organs of a fish. He drives the demon Asmodeus into the desert. He does all of this while pretending to be an ordinary man. When he finally reveals himself, Tobit and Tobias fall on their faces in terror. Raphael’s response: “Do not be afraid. Peace be with you.” The healer walks beside you. You do not know he is there. That is the point.
In 1 Enoch, Raphael is tasked with binding the fallen angel Azazel hand and foot, throwing him into darkness, and covering him with sharp rocks until the day of judgment. The healer is also the jailer.

Uriel
אוּרִיאֵל
Light of God
The Flame of Knowledge. The angel of wisdom, repentance, and the sun. Guardian of the Gate of Eden.
Uriel guards the entrance to the Garden of Eden with a flaming sword. He is the angel who warned Noah of the coming flood. In 2 Esdras, Uriel is sent to answer the impossible questions of the prophet Ezra — questions about why the righteous suffer, why evil persists, why God allows the destruction of those who love him. Uriel’s answers are not comforting. They are precise. He tells Ezra that the human mind cannot contain the answers to these questions while still in a human body. The light of God is too bright for mortal eyes. That is not a metaphor.
Uriel is the angel who checks the names in the Book of Life. When you die, Uriel is the one who already knows whether your name is written there.

V
Raguel
רְעוּאֵל
Friend of God
The angel of justice, fairness, and harmony. He watches the watchers.
Raguel’s job is to ensure that the other angels do not overstep. He is heaven’s internal affairs. In the Book of Enoch, Raguel is “one of the holy angels who takes vengeance on the world of the luminaries.” This means he holds the stars accountable. If an angel falls — if a celestial being breaks rank — Raguel is the one who brings the charge. He does not fight the enemies of God. He prosecutes the allies of God who betray their station. The most dangerous judge is the one who judges his own side.
When the Watchers fell and took human wives in Genesis 6, producing the Nephilim, it was Raguel’s failure. He has been making up for it ever since. Justice born from shame burns hotter than justice born from principle.

Sariel
שָׂרִיאֵל
Command of God
The angel of death, the moon, and forbidden knowledge. The one who taught humans the course of the moon.
Sariel is the most ambiguous archangel. In some traditions he is righteous — one of the seven who stand before the throne. In others he is listed among the fallen Watchers who taught humanity secrets they were not meant to know. The Book of Enoch names Sariel as the angel who taught the course of the moon to humans. Knowledge of lunar cycles gave humanity agriculture, navigation, calendars, and the ability to predict eclipses. Sariel gave us time. Whether that was a gift or a curse depends on what you do with it.
In the War Scroll of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Sariel’s name is written on the shields of the soldiers of the Sons of Light. The angel of forbidden knowledge fights on the side of the righteous. Even heaven uses the weapons it tried to keep hidden.

Remiel
רְמִיאֵל
Mercy of God
The angel of hope, divine visions, and the souls awaiting resurrection. Guide of the faithful dead.
Remiel’s task is the most patient of all the archangels. He tends to the souls who are waiting. Not in hell. Not in heaven. In between. The faithful dead who have not yet been resurrected rest in a place that most traditions refuse to name, and Remiel is their shepherd. He gives them visions of what is coming. He sustains their hope across millennia. Remiel is the archangel of the long wait — the one who holds your hand in the dark between death and what comes after.
In 2 Baruch, Remiel announces the resurrection of the dead. The souls he has tended for thousands of years will finally rise. The patience of Remiel is rewarded at the end of time. But not before.
