Váli

Born to Kill · One Night Old

Rindr will bear Váli in western halls; that son of Óðinn will kill when one night old — he will not wash hand, nor comb head, before he bears to the pyre Baldr's adversary.

— Baldrs draumar, st. 11 (Dronke trans.)

Conceived for Vengeance

Óðinn learned from a völva that Baldr would be killed. To ensure vengeance, he sought out the giantess Rindr — a figure whose identity varies across sources: goddess, giantess, or human princess. In Saxo Grammaticus' account, Óðinn used disguises and rune-magic to approach her. The union had one purpose: to produce a son who would kill Höðr before the body of Baldr was cold.

One Night Old

Váli grew to full adulthood within a single day of his birth. Uncombed hair. Unwashed hands. He drew an arrow and shot Höðr dead — the blind god who had unwittingly killed Baldr with a mistletoe shaft guided by Loki's treachery.

Snorri's description in Gylfaginning is spare: "One is called Áli or Váli, son of Óðinn and Rindr: he is daring in fights, and a most fortunate marksman."

He then bound Loki with the entrails of Loki's own son Narfi. Justice. Then stillness.

— Gylfaginning, ch. 30, 50 · Völuspá, st. 32–34

A Note on Sources

A single passage in Gylfaginning names "Váli" as a son of Loki: "Then were taken Loki's sons, Váli and Nari." However, two other passages in the same work — and every other surviving source — identify Váli as Óðinn's son. Ursula Dronke's translation of Völuspá st. 34 reads "Then did Váli slaughter bonds twist," which she attributes to Váli son of Óðinn binding Loki. Scholarly consensus treats the Loki-parentage passage as a scribal error or confusion between two distinct figures.

Váli is prophesied to survive Ragnarök alongside his brother Víðarr (Vafþrúðnismál st. 51) — two sons of Óðinn who outlast the destruction of everything their father built. The avengers inherit the new world.
