Robert the Bruce
He lost everything. Then he won everything.
Robert the Bruce (1274–1329) was an Anglo-Norman noble with royal Scottish blood. After killing his rival John Comyn in a church, he was crowned King of Scots in 1306 — but the coronation was tainted by murder, and Edward I of England destroyed his forces immediately. His wife Elizabeth de Burgh was imprisoned. His brothers were executed. Bruce fled to caves and islands.
The legend says he watched a spider try six times to anchor its web, failing each time. On the seventh attempt, it held. Bruce went back to Scotland and waged guerrilla war for eight years. In 1314, at the Battle of Bannockburn, he broke English control of Scotland with a force one-third the size of the English army. The Treaty of Northampton in 1328 finalized Scottish independence. His daughter Marjorie married Walter Stewart, and their son Robert II founded the House of Stewart — the line that would eventually rule England too.
The spider tried seven times. Bruce tried seven times. On the seventh, it held.
