POSIDON
He struck the earth with his trident and the sea obeyed. Three prongs. Three realms: sea, storm, earthquake. The ocean does not ask permission.
He lost Athens to a goddess.
The olive tree beat
the saltwater spring.
Poseidon struck his trident into the Acropolis and saltwater poured forth. Athena planted an olive tree. The city chose the tree. Poseidon flooded the plain and went home to the deep. This is not defeat — it is the ocean receding on its own terms. It always returns.
The Nereids were his — fifty sea nymphs, daughters of the old man of the sea. Each one a different quality of water. Calm, wild, foaming, still. The ocean is not one thing. It is fifty things simultaneously.
Fifty daughters.
Fifty colorways.
