Leif Erikson
Five hundred years before Columbus, a Norseman walked on American soil.
Leif Erikson, son of Erik the Red, sailed west from Greenland around 1000 AD and landed at a place he called Vinland — almost certainly the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. He found wild grapes, self-sown wheat, and timber. He built the first European settlement in North America, five centuries before Columbus was born.
Columbus gets the holiday. Leif gets the truth. He was not trying to prove the earth was round. He was not funded by a monarchy. He heard a rumor from a trader named Bjarni Herjolfsson, who had been blown off course and seen land to the west. Leif bought Bjarni's ship, hired a crew, and went to see for himself.
Leif Erikson is a brand for explorers. Navigation tools, outdoor gear, and travel goods for people who go where the map ends. Not the tourist. The person who goes first.
