The Wives of Ragnar

Lagertha was a Viking ruler and shield-maiden from Norway. When the Swedish king Frø invaded and put the women of the royal family into a brothel, Lagertha dressed in men’s clothing and fought back. She was the key to Ragnar’s victory. He courted her. She set a bear and a great hound to guard her door. He killed them both with his hands. She married him.

When Ragnar later faced a civil war, Lagertha — whom he had divorced — sailed to his rescue with 120 ships. She still loved him. She saved the day with a flanking counter-attack that turned the panic of Ragnar’s forces into the enemy’s camp. Then she went home. She ruled as a jarl in her own right. She didn’t need him. She chose him.

Thora Borgarhjört was the daughter of Earl Herrauðr of Götaland. Her father gave her a small serpent as a gift. It grew. And grew. Until two enormous venomous snakes guarded her residence and no man could approach. Ragnar came in tarred leather breeches, killed both serpents, and won her hand. He earned his name — Lothbrok, “hairy breeches” — from the tar-soaked trousers that saved him from the venom.

She gave him his most famous sons. She was not a warrior. She was the reason warriors fight. The beauty behind the poison. The prize that requires bravery to reach.

Daughter of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer and Brynhildr the Shield-Maiden. Hidden in a harp case as a child. Raised by strangers under the name Kráka. When Ragnar tested her — come to me neither dressed nor undressed, neither hungry nor full, neither alone nor in company — she arrived in a fishing net, biting an apple, with a dog at her side. She solved the riddle before he finished asking it.

She told Ragnar she would give him a son with a serpent in his eye. Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye was born with the ouroboros mark. She warned him to wait three days before lying with her or the child would be born a monster. He didn’t listen. Ivar the Boneless was born. Every prophecy came true. They never believed her.

Swanloga appears in Danish sources as a possible fourth wife of Ragnar. Some scholars believe she is another name for Aslaug. Others believe she is a separate person entirely. Almost nothing is known. One line. One name. That’s all that survives.
