CONCHOBAR
No man spoke before the king. The king did not speak before Cathbad.
Conchobar mac Nessa ruled Ulster from Emain Macha (Navan Fort). His mother Ness gained the kingship for him through a trick — she agreed to marry King Fergus mac Róich on the condition that Conchobar rule for one year. Conchobar ruled so well that the people refused to give the throne back. He was the center around which every story of the Ulster Cycle orbited.
He commanded the Red Branch Knights — the greatest warriors in Ireland, including Cú Chulainn, Conall Cernach, and Fergus mac Róich. His druid was Cathbad. His court was magnificent. But his jealousy over Deirdre fractured his kingdom and drove Fergus into exile with 3,000 warriors — warriors who would later fight against Ulster in the Táin.
