The most elite mercenary unit in history.
The Varangian Guard was a unit of Norse, Rus, and Anglo-Saxon warriors who served as the personal bodyguard of the Byzantine Emperor in Constantinople from the 10th to 14th centuries. They were feared throughout the Mediterranean. They swore loyalty not to a country but to the Emperor himself — and they were paid in Byzantine gold, the richest currency on earth.
They fought in Italy, Sicily, Bulgaria, Syria, and the Holy Land. They were the Emperor’s last line of defense. When everything else fell, the Varangians held. They were the wall.
