PHILIP
The one-eyed king who built the army that conquered the world.
He lost an eye at Methone. He never lost a war.
The Story
Philip II didn’t conquer the world. He built the machine that did.
Philip lost his right eye to an arrow at the Siege of Methone in 354 BC. He kept fighting. He reorganized the Macedonian army, invented the sarissa (an 18-foot pike that outreached every weapon in Greece), created the Companion Cavalry, unified Greece through diplomacy and force, and built the military machine his son Alexander inherited and used to conquer everything from Egypt to India.
Philip is the founder who never gets credit. Alexander gets the glory. Philip built the foundation. Without the one-eyed king, the boy never leaves Macedon.
The eye he lost at Methone saw further than both of Alexander’s.
