TÍR EÓGHAIN
Eóghan’s country.
Tír Eóghain — anglicised as Tyrone — takes its name directly from Eóghan mac Néill, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages and founder of the Cenél nEóghain. The territory encompassed most of what is now County Tyrone and parts of County Londonderry.
From the 5th century to the 17th, the O’Neill dynasty ruled this land. Dungannon was the capital. Tullyhoge was the inauguration site. The Sperrins were the backbone. The Blackwater was the border. After the Flight of the Earls and the Plantation, the name survived but the people who gave it meaning were scattered.
